Wired Glass in Calgary

Repair, Replacement and Same-Day Service

A cracked wired glass pane in a fire-rated frame is not a regular glass repair. The replacement must match the original ULC certification, carry the right wire pattern, and get installed without disturbing the frame’s fire seal. JP Glass handles wired glass repair and replacement across Calgary for property managers, facility maintenance teams, and building inspectors who need the pane swapped out fast and correctly. Same-day quotes most days. Stock on hand for standard sizes.

When Wired Glass Needs Replacement

Wired glass breaks for different reasons than regular glass

The wire mesh inside makes it tougher but also creates failure patterns regular glaziers don’t recognize:
Impact damage

Vandalism, accidental impact, dropped tools. The wire mesh holds the fragments in place which makes the damage less visible at first, but the pane is compromised and needs to come out.

Smoke staining

After a small fire event, the glass may not be cracked but the wire mesh is contaminated and the frame seal compromised. Replacement is required by ULC even if the glass looks intact.

Wire mesh corrosion

Older wired glass (pre-1990s installations) develops rust spots along the embedded wire over time. The rust spreads and weakens the pane. Visible as orange streaks running along the wire pattern.

Inspection failures

Building inspectors flag wired glass missing ULC labels, painted-over labels, or panes that have been replaced with non-rated glass at some point. We replace these to bring the assembly back into code compliance.

Thermal shock cracking

Wired glass cracks under sudden temperature changes faster than tempered glass. Common after sprinkler activation, vandalism with cold water on hot glass, or extreme Calgary winter conditions inside heated buildings.

If any of these describes what you’re looking at, send us a photo of the pane and the frame label area. We can quote off the photo in most cases and confirm the size on-site.

The Two Types of Wired Glass We Stock

We carry both standard wired glass products in our Calgary warehouse, ready to cut to size:

Polished wired glass

Clear glass with a fine welded steel mesh embedded inside. The wire is visible but the glass surface itself is smooth and transparent. Used where the architect wanted clear visibility through the wire pattern. Stairwells, vision panels in fire doors, corridor sidelights.

Georgian wired glass

Patterned (textured) glass with the same embedded wire mesh. The surface is obscured for privacy, common in older buildings and institutional applications like schools and hospital corridors. The wire pattern is more visible against the textured surface.
Both products are 6mm (1/4 inch) standard thickness. We can cut to size up to roughly 1,300 square inches per pane for 20-minute rated frames, smaller for higher fire ratings. Glass arrives within one to three business days for non-stock sizes.

Replacing Wired Glass in Existing Fire-Rated Frames

The frame stays. The glass gets swapped. This is the most common wired glass job we handle. Steps we follow:
Site visit and frame inspection

We verify the frame is still in good condition with all hardware intact. Damaged frames need separate repair or full assembly replacement.

ULC label verification

We read the original ULC label on the frame to confirm the fire rating duration and the test standard. The replacement glass must match.

Size measurement

We measure the daylight opening (the visible glass area) and add the rebate dimension that fits into the frame stops.

Glass cutting and prep

Cut to size in our Calgary shop, edges polished, ready for install.

Installation

Old glass removed, frame stops cleaned of old glazing compound, new glass set with intumescent glazing tape (this is critical for fire seal integrity), stops re-installed.

Compliance documentation

We provide a written record of the replacement including the glass spec, frame fire rating, and install date. Property managers keep this for their compliance file.

The whole process from quote to install is usually 2 to 5 business days for standard sizes, 5 to 10 days for custom cuts. Same-day emergency response available for high-traffic public areas.

What's included in the per-pane price

What's NOT included

For multi-pane jobs (5+ panes in the same building), we drop the unit price 10 to 15 percent. Property managers handling multiple buildings sometimes set up an annual maintenance arrangement with us. We invoice monthly for whatever work we did, no minimum commitments.

Why You Can't Use Regular Glass to Replace Wired Glass

This is the most common mistake we see when a property manager hires a general handyman or a non-glazier to just put any glass in there. Regular float glass in a fire-rated frame fails three things:

Building code compliance

The Alberta Building Code requires fire-rated assemblies to maintain their certified rating. Swapping wired glass for regular glass voids the ULC certification on the entire assembly. Building inspectors catch this during follow-up inspections.

Insurance coverage

Property insurance policies typically require code-compliant fire separations. A non-rated replacement glass can invalidate fire-related coverage if it contributes to a fire spread incident.

Liability exposure

If a fire spreads through a non-rated pane and causes harm, the property owner faces direct liability for code violation. The we didn't know defense doesn't hold.

We’ve replaced non-compliant glass swap-outs done by other contractors on at least 15 Calgary properties in the past year. Property managers find out during inspection cycles, and the work has to be redone. Just use a glazier who knows fire-rated assemblies the first time.

Wired Glass in Calgary Residential Homes

Standard wired glass shows up in older Calgary homes (pre-1990s construction) most often in:

The problem with wired glass in residential settings today is the impact safety issue. The Alberta Building Code now requires any glazing within 18 inches of the floor, within 24 inches of a doorway, or in handrails to meet CAN/CGSB-12.1 impact safety standards. Standard wired glass does NOT meet these standards. The wire mesh holds fragments together during a fire but does not stop human impact injury.

When we replace wired glass in residential locations today, we recommend one of these options:

Tempered fire-rated glass

Meets both fire safety AND impact safety standards. Costs about 2 to 3 times more than standard wired glass but eliminates the safety glazing problem.

Ceramic fire-rated glass

Clear appearance, no wire pattern, meets impact safety standards. Premium pricing but appropriate for residential settings where the wire pattern was never wanted aesthetically.

Full assembly upgrade

Sometimes the right answer is replacing the whole fire-rated assembly with a modern code-compliant unit that uses ceramic glass and proper safety glazing throughout.

We’ll walk through which option fits when we look at the existing assembly. The right choice depends on location, exposure, and budget.

School and institutional buildings

Vision panel in classroom door cracked. Same-day temporary cover, weekend permanent install if needed to avoid disrupting class hours.

Hospital and healthcare facilities

Corridor vision panels with broken glass create infection control issues even before fire-safety concerns. Same-day response standard.

Multi-unit residential building common areas

Broken stairwell or hallway pane in a condo or apartment building. Property manager liability mounts hourly until the pane is secured.

For emergencies, call (403) 558-0427 directly. Don’t email. We dispatch a technician within 2 to 4 hours during weekday business hours, or next-morning for after-hours calls. Emergency rate is our standard per-pane rate plus a $95 service fee.

Frequently Asked Questions About Glass Cutting

Boarding works as a temporary cover (24 to 72 hours) but creates two problems if you leave it longer. First, the building inspector flags it as a code violation if seen during a routine visit. Second, the boarded frame loses its fire-rating certification because the original glass spec is no longer in place. Get the permanent replacement done within a week of the break.
